The radical changes in environmental regulations have demanded an attitude change in each activity of the company. From the new tasks, the following have received the greatest focus:

  • To reduce the amount of the waste generated during production significantly by nearly 40% and to convert the materials containing vegetable oil to valuable products to the highest possible extent. The most important of these products are feed complements, which increase the energy content of animal feed, and lecithin for human consumption. From materials containing vegetable oil that are not suitable for these purposes, compost is produced for effective melioration.
  • To keep the amount and the impurity of industrial sewage at the lowest level, and ensuring that water emission of the rebuilt sewage treatment system continuously meets the environmental standards. This is very important in case of the Martfû plant, because the factory is situated at the river Tisza, which is the key source of the plant's water supply and purified sewage is emitted into it again.
  • To reduce the atmospheric emission of the boilers burning sunflower hull, which is a renewable resource. This project is close to completion and total costs will amount to ca. HUF 500 million.
  • To participate in a national project for the selective collection and recycling of packaging materials and to play a prominent role in the organization dealing with this task in the future.

The company is aware that the engineering and technical development alone is not sufficient to fully comply with environmental rules and regulations. According to this, as a part of its commitment to the protection of the environment, Bunge Rt. certified its Environmental Management System implemented accordind to the ISO 14001 standard in September 2003.
